PERFORMING MEMBERS

Neil Mackie

Founding member of Mugenkyo, trained with Kurumaya Sensei in Fukui on the west coast of Japan for two years, returning to the UK in 1994 to form the group with Miyuki Williams. Originally a kit drummer in a variety of rock bands in hometown Bristol and London, Mackie always had a yearning to play drums standing at the front of the stage, and found taiko! Powerful Odaiko big drum player and Jiuchi base rhythm comandante, Mackie is the visionary and driving force of the group, relentlessly pushing the group ever forward.

Miyuki Williams

Co-founder of Mugenkyo, also trained in Japan under Kurumaya Sensei. Born of a Japanese mother and Welsh father, she spent her childhood in Indonesia, Malaysia & USA. As a child Miyuki studied the piano and Nihon Buyo classical Japanese dance, which have influenced her playing style. A powerful and graceful player with incredible stamina, Miyuki expresses her joy of life through her playing and teaching.

Teresa Brookes

Originally from the Isle of Arran, joined the group full-time in July 2000 after involvement with Mugenkyo through classes and workshops since 1998. Multi-talented musician, Teresa performs the Shinobue bamboo flute and the Didgeridoo, as well as playing the guitar in her spare time! Her latest venture has been learning the Shamisen Japanese stringed lute. As well as excelling at movement and taiko choreography, Teresa is also an instructor at the Dojo, and the main teacher for the Mugen Taiko Dojo schools outreach work.

Georgie Harris

Originally from Oakham in Rutland, Georgie moved to Glasgow to pursue a music degree at Glasgow University, specialising in flute (western) and music performance. A classically-trained musician, with a background in orchestral playing, Georgie began training at the dojo in 2003, joining Mugenkyo as a trainee member in 2005. Her hard-working nature and energetic & charismatic presence onstage has earned her a place as a full group member from 2006.

TRAINEE MEMBER

Lucy Searle

This year’s Mugenkyo trainee is a senior member of Taiko Academy, the Mugen Taiko Dojo’s intensive training programme. Lucy from Glasgow, with her trademark wild hair and excellent rhythm, started at the dojo in October 2003, and has a musical background in trumpet, piano and choral singing.

Also a member of Taiko Academy, training at the dojo since May 2004, and known as “Combat Kate” for her military precision! Katy is a welcome addition to this year’s Mugenkyo tour line-up, both on and offstage.
